Review: Earth Song

We look at the first book in Nick Cook's Earth Song series

Earth Song is one of those great sci-fi books that within a few pages has you completely hooked with a very intriguing storyline. Lauren Stelleck isn’t your typical lead character either. She has synaesthesia, a condition where senses get mixed up. In Lauren’s case that means that certain sounds trigger patterns in her vision, something that turns out to be a unique key in being able to piece together the mysterious events linked to a flurry of UFO sightings.

A must read first is Nick Cook’s novella, The SignalIt perfectly sets the stage for what’s to follow in Earth Song. In it we are first introduced to Lauren who is a radio telescope operator at Jodrell Bank in England. One night she and her fellow operator, Steve, receive a strange transmission that throws her and the rest of the team into an incredible first contact situation. It’s available on Amazon, but you can actually get the Kindle version for free by signing up to Nick’s newsletter.

The Earth Song series that follows on from the events of the night of The Signal. Journeying to Isle of Orkney in Scotland after a number of UFO sightings, Lauren teams up with archaeologist, Jack Harper. The mystery builds rapidly from there and if you liked X-Files then you’re going to adore this book. Be warned it was hard to put Earth Song down once I’d started. It’s written in the best tradition of thriller mystery sci-fi with just the right balance of science and story, that will leave you desperate to find out what happens next.

I’ve just started reading the sequel, Earth Cry, and I can already tell that this is going to be one of those stand out sci-fi series that you keep going back to. I just hope there will be an audiobook version one day. Highly recommended.
