Review: Blood and Treachery

JD Kirk's fourth novel takes us to the wilds of Glencoe

After the publication of his first crime thriller, A Litter of Bones, in May 2019, JD Kirk has gone on to become a permanent fixture in Amazon’s crime charts, and an international number one bestseller.

The fourth book in his DCI Jack Logan series, Blood and Treachery, was published recently, and we were lucky enough to secure a review copy, which we quickly devoured.

As always, JD Kirk has delivered a tale so strong, so well-told, so well-written, and so devastatingly emotional that I had to take a breather after finishing it. Blood and Treachery is a little different to the first three in that we see the harsh reality of polis work. A good story isn’t always just about happy endings and catching the bad guy—although, the team does indeed solve the case—sometimes there are losses so deep and so heart-wrenching you wonder how the characters will go on.

The characters…what can I say? They’re not merely characters anymore. They’re alive in the pages of Kirk’s books. They’re grumpy and flawed, humorous and complicated, sad and so very determined. This is the true gift Kirk gives his readers—his characters. His books don’t pull punches and this one laid the truth bare. It showed us that police work is dangerous and no matter how good a person is at their job, at life, bad things can, and sometimes do, happen, but it’s what we choose to do after such a loss, which truly shapes the people we become. I can’t wait to see where they go from here.

Blood and Treachery is the fourth book by bestselling Scottish author, JD Kirk, and is available now from Amazon.
